Wrong-Way Driver, Narrow Miss

Fortunately, not all mishaps on the road result in serious accidents. Recently, a potentially tragic set of circumstances turned into a narrow miss in Mesa, Arizona, when a driver going the wrong way on US 60 was able to correct himself.

Cause Uncertain

In the early morning hours of April 9, 2017, a driver in a white vehicle ended up in the eastbound lanes of the highway—but driving westbound. Authorities aren't sure how the driver ended up in the wrong lanes, but the driver recognized his error and corrected himself by moving into the proper lanes before causing what could have been a devastating car accident.

Police later noted that the driver seemed "sleepy" and "out of it" at the time of the error. They did not believe that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There was no indication as to whether any citations would be given.

Wrong-Way Crashes Often Serious

The outcome of this incident was, thankfully, far different than similar incidents in recent weeks and months.

For instance, on April 2, a driver collided with another car after going the wrong way on Loop 101, causing minor injuries. That driver was being investigated for a possible DUI.

The weekend before that, a nineteen-year-old driver narrowly missed causing a multiple-vehicle accident when he just avoided several cars while driving the wrong way on Loop 202. He then hit another driver head-on and caused injuries to at least three individuals. That driver was charged with aggravated DUI, as well as with several different counts of endangerment.

Luckily, the recent wrong-way driver was able to correct himself before causing a serious accident. Whether he was drowsy or had some other issue that caused the confusion, if an accident had occurred, he would almost certainly have been legally responsible for any injuries or damages caused.
