Driving long distance? Stay safe on the road and avoid a lawsuit with these 5 driving tips

Long Distance Driving

When you're driving long distance, either to visit relatives, for a holiday or for work the idea of falling asleep at the wheel is a terrifying one. The last thing anyone wants is to find out that they're responsible for a car accident due to their own negligence – if you're looking for a Beaumont car accident attorney, click the link – you'd face a lawsuit, a criminal investigation, medical bills, the loss of your license and of course some hefty fines. Not forgetting the guilt you'd feel if anyone had gotten hurt.

So, what tips are there for staying safe behind the wheel when you're driving long distance? Read on to find out.

Get plenty of sleep

It goes without saying, but it might surprise you how many people believe that they'll simply "manage" when they're behind the wheel. Fast forward 6 hours and they're probably already regretting their decision to stay up late the night before. Before a long drive you should always try to get at least 8 hours sleep. While this isn't possible for everyone, due to work or parental responsibilities, or maybe because you struggle to sleep if you head to bed earlier than usual, you should still aim to rest as much as possible. So, try to preserve your energy levels as much as possible.

Have all your correct documentation

Getting pulled over by the police can happen to anyone, it could be a completely random spot check or maybe you have a taillight out and you didn't notice. To help things run a little smoother, make sure that you have all the correct documentation with you – license and registration please! Not forgetting your insurance documents!

Don't drink and drive

If you're on the road, you might be tempted to have a beer or two at your next pit stop. However, resist the urge, not only do you run the risk of getting a little carried away, but alcohol makes you feel tired at the wheel and your reactions won't be the same. And if you're driving through an unfamiliar city or landscape, you'll need to have your wits about you.

Have an emergency car kit

If your car breaks down or you're stuck in traffic for a few hours, it's always a good idea to have some supplies. Items such as jump leads, a tow rope, a first aid kit, bottled water, blankets, food that stores well and a torch will all come in handy if the unexpected should happen.

Your insurance

Before you travel, ask yourself – are you definitely insured? The amount of drivers who hit the road believing that they are covered when they're not is utterly staggering. This could be due to a clerical error, a late or missed payment or some other reason. No matter what the circumstance may be, double check that you're fully covered, and your policy extends to your journey home too. Driving without insurance means you run the risk of loosing your license, huge fines and even time behind bars.
