natural person - A human being, not a legal entity, afforded certain rights under the United States Constitution. Naturalization - Process by which a person acquires nationality after birth and becomes entitled to privileges of citizenship. Negligence - Failure to use care which a reasonable and prudent person would use under similar circumstances. negotiable instrument - Written document held by the owner that represents an unconditional promise to pay a specified amount of money upon demand. Negotiation - The process of submission and consideration of offers until an acceptable offer is made and accepted. net earnings - Earnings that remain after subtraction of mandatory deductions from an employee's gross income. net income - The amount of income that remains after deductions are taken from gross income. Next Friend - One acting without formal appointment as guardian for the benefit of an infant, a person of unsound mind not judicially declared incompetent, or other person under some disability. next of kin - Closest relative of someone who has died. Usually the spouse is considered the "next of kin". No Bill - This phrase, endorsed by a grand jury on the written indictment submitted to it for its approval, means that the evidence was found insufficient to indict. No-contest Clause - Language in a will that provides that a person who makes a legal challenge to the will's validity will be disinherited. No-fault Proceedings - A civil case in which parties may resolve their dispute without a formal finding of error or fault. Noise Control Act - A act which gives government agencies the right to promulgate standards and regulations relating to abatement of noise emissions, i.e., requirements that autos and like vehicles must have mufflers. nolo contender - No Contest. Plea that has the same affect as a guilty plea but is not considered an admission of guilt. non-competition agreement - Agreement where one party agrees not to compete with the other party for a specific period of time and within a particular area. non-dischargeable debts - Debts that will not be voided by the law of bankruptcy. nondisclosure agreement - Contract in which a person or business promises to treat certain information as a trade secret and not disclose it to others without authorization. nonexempt property - Property creditors can claim under a Chapter 7 bankruptcy or when a creditor sues and wins a judgment. Nonfeasance - Nonperformance of an act which should be performed; omission to perform a required duty or total neglect of duty. Non-jury Trial - Trial before the court but without a jury. nonprofit corporation - Legal entity authorized by state law allowing people to unite for the purpose of either benefiting members of an organization or for some other public benefit. Nonprofit corporations can make a profit, but the business cannot be designed primarily for profit notarize - When a Notary Public certifies a legal document thereby establishing the authenticity of the signature on the document. notary public - Public officer, licensed by the state to administer oaths, certify legal documents and perform other specified functions. Notice - Formal notification to the party that has been sued in a civil case of the fact that the lawsuit has been filed. Also, any form of notification of a legal proceeding. Notice to creditors - A notice given by the bankruptcy court to all creditors of a meeting of creditors. nuisance - Anything that interferes with the use of property by being irritating, offensive, or obstructive. nuisance fees - Fees charged by most credit card companies to increase their profits when a person fails to use the card in a manner preferred by the credit card companies. Nuncupative will - An oral (unwritten) will. NASD - National Association of Securities Dealers.
