Walking down the road—or simply crossing it—should not be the most dangerous thing you do during the day. However, the sad reality is that it easily can be. Between distracted and impaired drivers and those who don't carefully check their blind spots, you could be in danger every time you leave the house.

Multiple People Injured

Six people in New York recently learned this lesson the hard—and tragic—way. Terrance Smith of Ohio was driving when he struck a pedestrian and several parked cars and then fled his vehicle. Police apprehended him a short time later. Unfortunately, the pedestrian died from his injuries while at the scene of the accident. Five other people were injured during the man's reckless driving spree and were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Charges for the Crash

Terrance Smith has been charged with driving while impaired and leaving the scene of an accident, among other charges. In the state of New York, these charges can lead to not only hefty fines, but also jail time, if convicted. The charge of driving while impaired alone can cost up to $500 in fines, a suspended license, fifteen days in jail, and the need to pay a $250 minimum yearly assessment fine. And that is for first-time offenders. A first-time offender for leaving the scene of an accident can spend at least ninety days in jail and pay up to $500 in fines.

While you might think that it'll save money not to take a cab or call an Uber if you've had a few drinks, think again. The money you save is negligible when put against the cost you'll pay if you injure another person or damage property.

In other similar cases, the drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol that cause accidents are held accountable in other ways besides fines and jail time. The victims in those cases are often entitled to compensation for their injuries and damages.
